Is a tire of a certain specification only compatible with a wheel hub of the same specification?

Update Time: 03 Jul 2026

1. Standard Rim (Measuring Rim) — Unique

Each tire size has one Measuring Rim Width specified in the standards. This is the reference rim used during tire design, dimensional verification, and performance testing. One tire size has one and only one measuring rim.

Example: For tire size 12R22.5, the standard measuring rim width is 9.00 inches. All data in the tire manufacturer's specification sheet — such as overall inflated diameter, load index, and section width — are measured with the tire mounted on this specific rim.

2. Approved Rim Range — Multiple

In actual installation, the same tire size can be mounted on rims of different widths, as long as the rim width falls within the Approved Rim Contours specified by TRA (Tire and Rim Association, U.S.) or ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) .

Example: For the same 12R22.5, the TRA-approved rim width range is typically 8.25 inches, 9.00 inches, and 9.75 inches.
